New Zealand surfer Marama Kake, 32, likes to surf naked, according to a story in the Courier Mail.

“I’m not out there to get everyone to look at me, I just love the sensation and simplicity of surfing in my ‘sustainability suit’,” Ms Kake said. “I cover up, or paddle away, if I am anywhere near children and have never had any trouble with lifeguards or authorities and I’ve been doing it for years in Australia and New Zealand.” … Ms Kake, who has “get naked, get sustainable” inscribed on her boards, said reactions were mostly favourable. She said women came over to say they admired her courage.

Hmmm, looks like Kake has found the perfect green marketing vehicle. If only Brad Gerlach had used that excuse naked surfing might have caught on around the world years ago.

Seems a winter off hasn’t slowed Nyjah Huston down one bit if the first stop of the 2012 Street League Skateboarding event in Kansas City is any judge. After blazing his way through the finals he rolled away with $150,000 for the win and another $10,000 for best trick. Here’s how he did it:

By posting consistently high scores and dropping big moves, like a bigspin to backside Hurricane on the bump-to-rail in the Best Trick section, he maintained a top two position throughout. In the final Big Section, with Monster teammate Chris Cole and Bastien Salabanzi nipping at his heels, Huston threw it into overdrive unleashing tricks on the rails like Cab backside lipslide, 360-flip lipslide, and then the one that sealed the deal and earned him Best Trick honors, the kickflip backside noseblunt slide.

This was Street League win number five for Huston and we’re betting there will be a few more on the season. For complete results, follow the jump.

11039490-LargeSnurfer inventor Sherman Poppen will be honored by The Community Foundation for Muskegon County on June 7, 2012 when they will unveil the “Turning Point” sculpture at 447 W. Western, according to a story on MLive.

“The chamber hall of fame recognizes business excellence, innovation and inventions that have made lasting contributions to industry and the community,” Larsen said. “Clearly, Mr. Poppen’s invention changed the course of history in winter sports. This recognition is long overdue. . . “It is our hope that the sculpture and the award will inspire others to see Muskegon’s role in winter sports development and see the Muskegon Lakeshore as a winter tourism destination,” Larsen said.

The sculpture, by artist Jason Dreweck features a Snurfer rider at the top of a turn with a modern snowboarder at the bottom. Nice to see the home hometown honoring Mr. Poppen.

The Snow Industries of America today confirmed what any snowboard retailer knows by heart–this last snowboard season was hard no matter how you look at it. No snow early season got everyone off to a dismal start, Christmas roared in as a valiant savior, but then things fell apart again. For retailers, the only consolation seems to be shared misery.

Snow sports unit sales declined 12% overall this season, including a 17% decrease in units sold through chain stores and a 14% decrease in specialty shops. However, Internet sales did rather well, and increased 10% this year driven by late season equipment and accessories sales. This may indicate that many retailers are using commerce enabled websites to move product when in-shop sales have slowed. Excluding carryover, online unit sales increased 15% through February and March this season, compared to February and March 2010/2011.

E004Bd3D426780B7359B3539C809The Toronto cabbie who “struck and killed” 28-year-old longboard skateboarder Ralph Bissonnette (pictured right) on Monday May 14, 2012, has been charged with second-degree murder, according to a story in the The Star.

Taxi driver Adib Ibrahim, 43, appeared in court Tuesday. The father of three from Ethiopia was remanded in custody until next week. . . What occurred is still under investigation, but surveillance video seized by police shows words being exchanged as cab and longboard wheeled along King St., neither going very fast. . . The footage captured Bissonnette traveling in the curb lane, close to the passing lane, making hand gestures at the cabbie, “but not flipping the bird,” a police source said, referring to the middle finger. . . Witnesses told police the taxi suddenly veered into Bissonnette’s lane and mounted the curb. At least one witness reported seeing the taxi strike Bissonnette then drive over his lower body, police said.

Our thoughts are with Bissonnette’s family and friends. We just hope justice can be served and Toronto cabbies can eventually learn to share the road.
